Locally grown produce, regional culinary heritage and honest, flavoursome dishes. These are at the heart of my approach to food. I think of the food we prepare as one of the most important cultural things that connect people to a place.

The past couple of weeks since posting Volume 1 of The past couple of weeks since posting Volume 1 of my recent trip to Tasmania have been jam-packed with juggling work, packing and moving out of my Angaston cottage, spending time with a visiting friend over Easter and cooking for a very long planned for special lunch event south of Adelaide.

As the season is quickly changing here from long summer days to cold nights and mild Autumn weather, so too is the finalising of my year of Covid-retreat here in the Barossa Valley, South Australia.

It's time to take stock, finish this chapter, return what's been borrowed, downsize to the bare essentials and soak up the last sights and sounds of where it all began so long ago and warmth of the people who've made this period back in South Australia so memorable.

To follow on from my Tasmania Volume 1. post with Volume 2., these pics were just some of the many countless stunning experiences of Tasmania's natural beauty over the second part of this 3 week trip.

With English-speaking ears, Rote Grütze sounds m With English-speaking ears, Rote Grütze sounds more like a specialised German power tool than a grape dessert. However no matter what language you speak most would agree that this traditional cold pudding made with the juice of Shiraz or Mataro grapes, sugar, spices and Sago or Tapioca found only in the Barossa Valley is a real vintage treat. Think of it like a thick, very grown-up bubble tea. Word on the grape vine is that the colour in the grapes this year is particularly intense. The proof is in the pudding. Serve with cream.

Three months have passed since my last Motorcycle Three months have passed since my last Motorcycle Diaries blog post, which now I've sat down to sort, edit and collate the images and write the text I realise how packed they've actually been post the months of sporadic lock down and restrictions.

Writing these posts has been a way of documenting my travels across Australia and staying in touch friends, family and with so many of you who I was fortunate to meet over the years through my wider work in food and Foragers in Pemberton, Western Australia. So my apologies for such a long period of radio silence.

This post, which includes a little Barossa, Fremantle, Mount Gambier and the Great Ocean Road will lead into two more currently on the drawing board that will be solely on my recent wonderful trip to Tasmania and hopefully make amends for my absence.

Also a key-less start button, click on the link in my Instagram bio or go to sophiezalokar.com to set off for another hopefully enjoyable ride.

For many January Summer holidays means casting a l For many January Summer holidays means casting a line with a hopeful catch that may, if you’re anywhere along the south coast of Australia, include King George whiting. A particularly iconic fish here in South Australia. This delicious fish recipe is of Sicilian origin where the culinary legacy of the Moors in the Mediterranean during the 8th and 15th centuries still remains strong. Traditionally, whole sardines or mackerel are butterflied and sandwiched with a breadcrumb, parsley and Parmesan stuffing. The plump stuffed fish with their tails sticking out are said to resemble the beccafico, a little bird found in Italy that loves to eat figs (fico). Here I've used King George Whiting fillets instead, adding currants, pine nuts, rosemary and allspice to the breadcrumb stuffing for an authentic taste of Moorish history. Alternately, use flattened chicken tenderloins. Recipe link via my profile.

My past Swiss mother in law was a wonderful cook, My past Swiss mother in law was a wonderful cook, so when I entered the family she undertook my education in Swiss cooking and baking traditions with great spirit. Christmas biscuits are a much-loved tradition in both Switzerland and Germany and these Pfeffernusse biscuits (which translates as pepper-nuts as they contain pepper and are the size of a small walnut) were and remain a real favourite. Much like what we know as gingerbread biscuits, they taste of all those typical Northern hemisphere Christmas spices. Despite the heat of an Australian Christmas, they still taste magically festive. Having to now think about packed lunches brought b Having to now think about packed lunches brought back the memory of this Zucchini, Feta, Rice & Pine nut Slice, which I’ve made countless times in various incarnations over the years. Along with zucchinis being prolific in the summer veg patch or easily available from the supermarket, this recipe is quick, vegetarian and gluten-free. The uncooked rice absorbs the moisture from the zucchinis, binding the filling as it cooks. A fabulous all-rounder. Recipe via the link in my bio.

A round up of my travels and experiences on and off my BMW 1200 GS during what was to be a year of adventure motorcycling. As a variation on the very apt saying goes, life in the time of Covid is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans. From a weekend of laffs and larks while upskilling with @bmwoffroadtraining to Spring blooms, more upskilling this time in Barossa vineyards and now lockdown, the twists and turns of 2020 continue.
